Fun Facts

In addition to education, I am extremely passionate about community service - I serve as an Americorps mentor and I love to participate in math and science fairs with young students. In my spare time, I enjoy ballet, yoga, reading poetry and spending time with friends and family. I am an avid coffee drinker and my favorite movie is Breakfast at Tiffany's.

About Me

My name is Christina Loera and I am a junior at the University of Arizona, majoring in Chemical Engineering and minoring in Mathematics. After graduation, I hope to attend graduate school for Chemical Engineering and then hopefully attend medical school. I am extremely passionate about problem-solving and I love to help students overcome academic barriers and my goal for every student is to help them cultivate a passion for life-long learning.

Experience

I have been a professional tutor for almost three years. For two years, I worked as a math and study skills tutor at Mansfeld Middle School, where I work with students on both an individual basis and a classroom basis. I am currently working for Americorps as a high school math tutor at Amphitheater High School. I work in a ESL classroom in which I assist students in overcoming language barriers and learning important fundamental mathematic principles. I am comfortable with language barriers.

Approach

I am a strong believer in the Growth Mindset learning theory - I encourage my students to measure their success in progress and learning, not grades. Growth mindset students tend to learn more, give up less, and generally develop a passion for life-long learning. As a tutor, I believe it is my role to not only explain difficult questions, but give students a foundation for approaching difficult problems, by asking guiding questions and encouraging students to use models and ask questions.
