Fun Facts

I have been playing lacrosse for most of my life and helped start the first team on the Big Island of Hawaii! Recently I have begin reading Japanese literature (in translation) and will begin an immersion program to improve my fluency in the language. I always make sure to have time to do art, like drawing and painting.

About Me

I am about to be a senior at Reed College pursing a Bachelors in Physics. My goal is to be able to participate in research at laboratories around the world. I am also very passionate about making STEM more accessible to racial and gender minorities and plan on advocating within STEM spaces.

Experience

Throughout high school, I spend many hours tutoring my peers officially and unofficially via the school counselor, or just going to my friends' houses after school. Since starting college, I have spend most of my breaks going home working at a tutoring firm teaching mainly middle and high school students in math.

Approach

I have always loved math, but understand that what teachers believe is very basic, is in fact very confusing. Another problem I see at schools is that math and science are presented only in one way, where actually, seeing the bigger picture helps students find a problem solving method that makes the most sense to them.

Algebra Tutoring

I am a general lover of algebra. Through middle and high school, I would always explain to my peers what was being taught in a more understandable way. Because of this, I am confident that I can teach concepts that I find basic to someone who is seeing it for the first time. I also taught algebra to many students during my time working at a tutoring firm.

Algebra II Tutoring

I am a general lover of algebra. Through middle and high school, I would always explain to my peers what was being taught in a more understandable way. Because of this, I am confident that I can teach concepts that I find basic to someone who is seeing it for the first time. I also taught algebra to many students during my time working at a tutoring firm.

AP Physics Tutoring

I took AP Physics C in high school, scoring 4s on both tests. I am currently studying physics in college and after the third year, believe that my understanding in basic concepts is more than sufficient. I am also very familiar with the test specifically, and can aid students studying types of questions that will show up.

Astronomy Tutoring

I took astronomy in high school, and was able to learn much from information given from the Mauna Kea telescopes. Many astronomical concepts have come up in my college courses as well. The high school level of astronomy is typically based in basic geometrical concepts, and showing that to students will clear up much confusion for them.

Calculus Tutoring

Knowledge of calculus was necessary for every semester of college I have completed. I now find calculus to be a basic tool, and being so familiar allows me to relay relevant concepts in an organized way. I have also completed a course in vector calculus, which is a slightly more rigorous version of multi-variable calculus.

Calculus AP Tutoring

As for Calculus, knowledge of calculus was necessary for every semester of college I have completed. I now find calculus to be a basic tool, and being so familiar allows me to relay relevant concepts in an organized way. I have also completed a course in vector calculus, which is a slightly more rigorous version of multi-variable calculus. In addition, I have take AP Calculus BC, scoring 5 and 4 for the AB and BC tests respectively.

Geometry Tutoring

Almost everything in physics can be based off of a triangle. I use geometry every day in my studies, and have experience teaching it to others. Geometry is also very important on the SAT math section.

Math Tutoring

Physics is deeply rooted in math, and I am a lover of both of those fields. I have taken an effectively uncountable (not really) number of math courses in my lifetime, and wish to learn more. I am also very passionate in aiding young people in enjoying math as much as I do.

Math Advance Tutoring

Physics is deeply rooted in math, and I am a lover of both of those fields. I have taken an effectively uncountable (not really) number of math courses in my lifetime, and wish to learn more. I am also very passionate in aiding young people in enjoying math as much as I do.

Physics Tutoring

I started taking physics in my junior year of high school, then AP Physics C the next, and five years later I'm heading into writing a thesis on physics. Not only do I love it, but I love to teach others about it. Many people find it very intimidating, but I know I can make it digestible.

Pre Algebra Tutoring

I am a general lover of algebra. Through middle and high school, I would always explain to my peers what was being taught in a more understandable way. Because of this, I am confident that I can teach concepts that I find basic to someone who is seeing it for the first time. I also taught algebra to many students during my time working at a tutoring firm.

Pre Calculus Tutoring

I now find calculus to be a basic tool, and being so familiar allows me to relay relevant concepts in an organized way. I have also completed a course in vector calculus, which is a slightly more rigorous version of multi-variable calculus.

Trigonometry Tutoring

Most of my tutoring time was spent in tutoring middle schools students in math. I had students who were very enthusiastic, who learned quickly and I could help get ahead, as well as students who were reluctant to admit that they did not understand a word their math teacher said the whole year. Either way, I am here to help!

Middle School Math Tutoring

The majority of my past tutoring experience was with middle school students. I believe that this is the time when many students get discouraged with learning mathematics. As someone who continues to use math every day in pursuit of my physics degree, I am determined to make math more approachable and comprehensible.

Elementary Math Tutoring

Building a solid foundation and understanding of numeric operations is very important for success in upper grade levels. Even at the college level, pattern recognition and basic geometric understanding is very important. I will aid students in building these skills so that math will continue be less intimidating in the upper levels.

Science Tutoring

In my current pursuit of a physics degree, I have a long and ongoing relationship with science. No matter the level, understanding of inquiry and testing using the scientific method is central to discovery. Keeping track of details is important, but staying curious will always be the driving force! I believe my extensive knowledge can inspire such motivation.

Macintosh Tutoring

I have been using Mac computers all my life. They are generally uncomplicated and user-friendly. Also, Steve Jobs attended Reed College.

Mathematica Tutoring

I am required to use Mathematica in my classes. I started off dreading it, not wanting to type in the code, but now I depend on it to shorten my problem solving time exponentially. I also use it in every lab report for data and error analysis.

Microsoft Excel Tutoring

Excel is a useful program for storing datasheets and quick visualizations. I use excel for storing data, but have also used it in the workplace to store answer sheets for practice tests. I'm capable of performing various functions in Excel, as well as producing charts.

Microsoft Word Tutoring

I completely understand the frustrations and the beauty of Microsoft Word. I have written essays and lab reports, and formatting can be difficult. At this level, I can teach these skills to students, as well as show students how to search for solutions to their own formatting issues.

Conversational Japanese Tutoring

I was raised by my mother who is from Japan, which gave me a solid foundation in conversational skills. From middle to high school, I took 5 years of Japanese. The schooling allowed me to learn structured grammar and vocabulary.
