Fun Facts
People usually get a kick out of the fact that I have the same name as "Iron Man" from the comic books but I want the students to feel like they are the genius superheroes and I am just to give them some extra tools to fight tough subjects. My mom has been my biggest hero as an English major who was always there to lend a non-judgmental scholastic ear to my ideas and I use that same philosophy with my students in their learning.
About Me
I am a graduate of Bridgewater State University and have been a professional tutor for the past 10 years working with all age groups in diverse subject areas. Seeking knowledge is what life is all about and I am proud to always be open-minded in my own search for understanding or sensitive to the unique educational needs and learning preferences of others. During my education I had an accident and have to use a wheelchair but it has only added new things to my life and is fun to ride around in.
Experience
I first attended a small liberal arts college in North Carolina that gave me the community experience and personalized education background to tutor. Then, at to Bridgewater State University I learned advanced teaching methods. I ran a mentoring program for youth and adults with disabilities that led to opportunities in private teaching and now I have 10 years experience as a professional tutor. I have also completed extensive community service projects throughout my education and career.
Approach
I had the same difficulties as many in the traditionally heavily-overpopulated classroom so I can be sympathetic to the individual needs of each student, and at the same time make it fun and stress-free. Learning is an adventure and I enjoy seeing a person be able to express themselves as part of their learning instead of just absorbing various information. My one-to-one tutoring offers students the edge of deeper understanding and appreciation for the subjects in the context to their own lives.

Psychology
Anatomy Physiology I Tutoring
I tutored a Nursing student who was also studying for the NCLEX Test with top of her class test scores. I know what it takes to differentiate very similar sounding questions and answers based on protocols and the most correct choices in the order of intended action they belong. From the patient POV I also gained valuable experience seeing how the healthcare system works. I also helped certify multiple CNA students to pass their Certified Nursing Assistant Tests. I have extensive resources for learning Anatomy and Physiology or medical related information with 20 years hospital related knowledge/experience.
Arts Tutoring
Landscape Art related class at Oxford in England. Other Art History class taken at Bridgewater State University.
Child Development Tutoring
I took college level Child Development and Life Cycle class at Bridgewater State as part of my Psychology Degree. I also tutored Child Development to a Senior at Umass Boston. People are very different developmentally at varying ages and life cycles should be celebrated more than what our society does to pin people to different stages who may be labeled as less developed or not. There are many new ideas in the field of development on how to help people grow/expand themselves or their awareness/appreciation of others.
Communication Tutoring
Took Communications at BSU and tutored class to multiple students.
Computer Science Tutoring
General proficiency in Computers, took Computer class at BSU for Bachelor's Degree.
Education Tutoring
I have a Psychology Degree from BSU which was the first Education school in the country. Through tutoring, mentoring, and other service related projects I learned advanced teaching strategies and listening skills to teach and empower people to reach their full potential in learning. The fact that I don't force any particular ideologies makes people feel motivated in their own effort to try something new or do their best for their own pride.
English Tutoring
I help college level students raise their writing paper scores even if it's just about noticing spacing or a slight grammar change here and there-everything counts!
Environmental Science Tutoring
I took Environmental Science in college and enjoy tutoring it since we are not the assumed master species on Earth. I enjoy the latest research and recently saw an expert video about us not evolving from mammals but fish.
ESL Tutoring
I don't treat ESL and other languages at different but help students bridge the gaps (or similarities) between the languages. Most languages are not separate but have more in common than not.
GED Tutoring
I had a couple students pass their GED with my help and helped others to stay motivated in their programs; which often is more important than individual attention exclusively.
Geography Tutoring
In a world economy and reports of 3 out of 4 people having cell phones the world is a lot smaller than Geography now, we are a planet only removed by technology-which is the new Geography teachings and learnings for many subjects.
Geology Tutoring
Similar to Environmental Science the world is at our mercy and I am appreciative to have an opportunity to learn or help others gain knowledge of our home planet.
History Tutoring
I took both US History classes at Bridgewater, along with World History and I have study guides that help students to get the main events and happenings; which tend to be helpful for them. To understand the past is to predict the future so I encourage students that the class it is not just about what happened and dates but how History repeats itself and themes of nature or other human factors.
Interior Design Tutoring
They say, "To each his/her own" but there are many styles of decora that make up a healthy home in comfort and appearance. There is something called, "chromotherapy" which is the therapy of colors and people can actually make themselves feel a certain way just with the use of different hues or even furniture tones and finishes can heal what used to be just 4 walls and doorknob. Very fun to learn about and experiment with!
Literature Tutoring
Literature has many common themes and messages no matter who the author is and I help the students be aware of these subtle; or not so subtle ways to express yourself or lead the audience into a certain mood or ending surprise. There is a reason we study Literary greats and help break down the ideas or play on words to discover each reading anew.
Nursing Tutoring
I tutored a Nursing student who was also studying for the NCLEX Test with top of her class test scores. I also helped certify multiple CNA students to pass their Certified Nursing Test. I have extensive resources for learning Anatomy and Physiology or medical related information with 20 years hospital related knowledge/experience.
Nutrition Tutoring
I completed an internship at the Public Health Department and also tutored kids about healthy nutrition so I can account for the basics of what the body needs; along with study guides that show all the necessary vitamins and minerals for sustainability.
Psychology Tutoring
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and can teach the subject in any way whether it is introducing someone to the General Psychology chapters for the first time, or helping someone to refine their advanced analysis. Most people have their own connection or personal story to share so I am supportive and encouraging of them to openly share anything anatomy/health related or anything else the mind can think of.
Religion Tutoring
World religions are similar to languages where there are more similarities than differences so I encourage students to compare and contrast the experiences of different cultures and people with their lives. College level Religion may be exclusive to one denomination but even within one religion there is much diversity to explore and celebrate.
Sociology Tutoring
I took college level Sociology at BSU and have tutored it students in the past. Similar to Psychology and other Social Sciences there are basics to learn about theorists so I give them a study guide to first become familiar with the terminology and people who have pioneered the field. If it is someone more advanced I have edited longer papers, but even nowadays Intro to Sociology students are expected to produce quite large term papers and reports which I can help edit.
Spanish I Tutoring
I took 4 years of high school Spanish and college as well so I I can definitely help college students to first know the names of the things to identify translated and then to communicate it in the proper form to speak what they need to say and understand what is spoken them on a daily basis.
Study Skills Tutoring
I enjoy doing a study session with a student and first seeing how they already like to do things and then maybe just making a suggestion or two to make it easiest for them to see, read, or record something. There are many options of note-taking or writing with various technologies that I have experience with. Positioning the computer to type easier, zooming in a new way, or making marks on notes to view the headings can all make a big difference at the end of the day and have the student feeling less tired and more in control of their homework piles.
Writing Tutoring
I encourage my students to do as little editing as possible on most of the drafts...people often try to edit as they go and it makes the paper sound a lot different then it would coming straight from their mouth. If it sounds good to them as they type or write then chances are it will be pretty close to what they want as the end product. Editing is the same way, I have them read what they have and if it sounds good to their own ears then we have a pretty good end paper to work with. I have an extensively broad vocabulary and fine tuning ability if you need that certain word or want to re-state a paragraph clearer.
Geometry Tutoring
First, I have a very efficient study guide that starts with lines on a page, and if you can put a line together you got an angle, and if you can put an angle together you got degrees. Whatever we are doing is all about seeing the relationships or building something...envisioning a real life situation or finding something to actually measure makes the page come to life and that's what we do with Geometry!
Homework Coach Tutoring
I enjoy sitting down with a student to a typical study session and first seeing how they already like to do things that work for them and then making a suggestion or two about how to mark the page (or even have it marked less) so it's easier for them to recall later...sometimes too many highlights can make it feel more confusing in the end. I also notice things like positioning, light, and zooming that can all make a big difference at the end of the day so the student will feel less tired and more in control of their homework piles.
Math Tutoring
I took up to Statistics in high school so that is my level of proficiency with my own Math education. I could tutor Math along with other subjects but I usually refer Algebra and advanced Geometry to other tutors who specialize in Mathematics as a major and/or chosen field profession.
Pre Algebra Tutoring
Pre-Algebra is all about rules and I got them all neatly arranged in a study guide that I use. Secondly, Pre-Algebra is about step-by-step following the rules and as long as the student finds a way to the end answer then I am happy for them...There is no wrong way to eat a Reeses!
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
There are many approaches to Reading Comprehension so I introduce the student to different ways of feeling out the text based on the scenario and then let them decide which way they like to learn best for a particular type of exam. We could either look over the headings of each section one-by-one first, read straight through, or start with the questions approach. Or maybe find a new way that works...it's all based on how each student learns and recognizes the reading to make the experience least stressful and get the information that the tester is looking for in the end to satisfy the question.
Science Tutoring
"Science" is not just a word but the tutor helps to bring the "stuff" to life. Not only is Science real but we make it fun and always keep in mind how there's a process that each person follows to become a "Scientist" in the classroom or anywhere else in the world or even outer space!
Writing Advance Tutoring
I encourage my students to do as little editing as possible on most of the drafts...people often try to edit as they go and it makes the paper sound a lot different then it would coming straight from their mouth. If it sounds good to them as they type or write then chances are it will be pretty close to what they want as the end product. Editing is the same way, I have them read what they have and if it sounds good to their own ears then we have a pretty good end paper to work with. I have an extensively broad vocabulary and fine tuning ability if you need that certain word or want to re-state a paragraph clearer.
Biology Tutoring
Getting kids excited about living things is an easy job in middle school and I have worked with many students to introduce them to new things they were eager to learn. It is my pleasure to answer questions and be a mentor like I have been for the past 10 years in diverse Life Sciences.
Middle School Math Tutoring
Math can either be frustrating or empowering for middle school kids and learning to do things step-by-step and procedural will help youth to follow the rules and be successful in their other subjects. Plus gaining the proper problem-solving skills that I teach will lead youth into higher levels of Math very quickly effortlessly and spill confidence over into their non-scholastic lives and activities.
Spanish Tutoring
The earlier the better with a foreign language and I think kids will be more likely to be open minded and relate to their classmates and the greater world if they have some sort of foreign experience at a young age..it is like a secret thing you know to be able to say words that not everyone else can figure out and gives kids a sense of belonging to another class or culture. What I can do is give them the language practice they don't get in school or may be afraid to sound silly asking other people to learn along with them as a peer and amigo!
Elementary Math Tutoring
Elementary Education is highly interactive and for kids to learn Math they need repetition in a fun way...flash cards and grids are helpful but with technology I can offer games and sing-a-longs to make computing almost automatic-programming the brain to recite equations as participate.
Social Studies Tutoring
To know your own world often starts by learning the greater world around you so I encourage my students to explore, explore, explore everything they can and then taking some time to internalize it by answer questions, expressing themselves in writing, art, or other mediums.
Not only is Social Studies about learning new things but understanding how they came to be what they are today. Knowing the present will then help us predict and better understand the future!
Biology Tutoring
Bios Logos is Latin for 'the study of life' and in high school Biology is more like 'the study of many lives' with there being so many diverse chapters and topics of life introduced. If I can help the student crack the formula of each chapter and come away with a greater appreciation for whatever way they are presenting the life form I think we have made some huge progress...not everyone is interested in tiny microscopic things or outer space but to consider both is to think beyond our daily lives and needs; and that is surely part of everyone's intended education and scope, microscope, telescope, nanoscope, etc.
Biology I Tutoring
Similar to high school Biology many students are not choosing to specialize in 'Bios Logos' but just need help understanding the various chapters better in order to get a good snapshot of the diversity of life. I can either introduce topics for the first time or show you what the textbook is trying to say in a different way than their technical jargon to get you learning what you need to know from the chapter and make you feel more excited about being human or an observer of other species/life processes-in space or under the microscope as top of the food chain yourself!
