Fun Facts

I am a dog person. Cats are cute too, but sadly I'm allergic to them.
I have an Adventure Time poster in my dorm room, and I have a Jake the Dog stuffed animal. Adventure time is a show on Cartoon Network, and Jake is one of the characters.
When I was in middle school I had a huge reading phase. I read all the time and even stayed up super late just to keep reading.

About Me

I'm a communication/psychology double major at Trinity University. After I graduate I plan to either work for a magazine or be family counselor. I graduated 20th in my high school class.
In the past I have held a leadership position in my high school's marching band, I was part of the National Honor Society, and have worked for the YMCA.

My experience tutoring has taught me that children love to learn, but they also love to feel confident in their ability to do well on their school work. Children who struggle academically often doubt their ability to succeed academically. This doubt may produce apathetic attitudes toward school work, increase procrastination, and lower the amount of effort put into completing schoolwork. Therefore, it is important to develop each child's confidence in their academic ability by enabling them to work out any academic problem they may face. Once a child is confident in their academic ability it is important to increase their degree of comfort in completing school work without assistance by challenging them.

First it is important to go over basic academic skills and make sure they are well understood and remembered. Next, practice is the only way to increase proficiency in any subject matter. I would have him or her show me how he or she would solve practice problems and write essays by applying basic academic skills. By slowly increasing the difficulty of the problems, practice will stimulate their problem solving skills when they come to a challenging problem. Finally, testing and quizzing is a good way to improve memory and increase learning.
