Fun Facts

I was born and raised in Mexico until I was 17. Also, when I was a kid I wanted to own a huge house to have a jungle in my backyard with a whole ecosystem in it so I could study it and become a self-taught biologist. Unfortunately, all I have gotten so far is a bunny named BomBon, but that is also because I have never lived outside of a city. I lived in Mexico City as a child and now I live in San Francisco which are 2 of the largest cities in the world.

About Me

I am recent graduate in psychology from the University of California Berkeley. I am currently applying to Ph.D. programs across the country to become a professor and researcher in neuroscience. I work part-time for the National Guard (as long as there are no emergencies in California) and I love teaching and tutoring, which I have been doing for a while.

Experience

I was one of those people who was scared of and hated math so in college, after doing really well in an algebra class, I accepted my teacher's offer to be a tutor. There, I taught other students how to build metacognitive skills to help them succeed in higher level math and taught algebra I, II, and trigonometry. I liked teaching so much that I designed my own class at Berkeley and taught leadership skills for 2 semesters. I also have experience teaching children with different abilities.

Approach

In my experience, learning a tough subject has more to do with attitude, organization, and engagement than it has to do with inherent capacity. And because no one has the same skills I find it important to identify and build on the established skills, as well as tackling the components that make someone reticent to learn. I focus on finding the "aha" moments on my students because that is when I know something has clicked and that the subject will never be so hard again.

Elementary Statistics Tutoring

I have taken 3 different statistics courses. First during college as a requirement for transferring, later on during my time at UC Berkeley focused on the neurological sciences. finally, I undertook a course based on a personal research project where I was in charge of methods, the development of the study itself, and its statistical analysis through coding.

English Tutoring

As a college student in a research institution, I am heavily graded on my ability to both do research and be able to present it. Because of that, I have learned the skills to synthesize, corroborate, and flesh out readings, as well as how to most effectively present data.
I must also mention that during my time in college I have never obtained a grade less than A in any English or public speaking course.

Spanish I Tutoring

As a native Spanish speaker I know I have the skills necessary to understand the grammatical components of my language. Moreover, here in the U.S., I was able to study advanced Spanish at a college level. I finished my classes with high scores and used them to graduate with high honors.

Study Skills Tutoring

First and foremost, as a psychologist I can understand the downfalls and reticence of someone to learn a specific subject they may find challenging, but I also know techniques to approach learning in refreshing ways.
Also, as a metacognition and math tutor, I was able to teach my students ways to organize their notes, their binders and their brains to be successful and through that decreased dropout rates by around 60% in all my classes.

Writing Tutoring

Writing cohesively, analytically and succinctly are all necessary skills a psychology student like me must master. I bring those skills to the table when I help my students develop their arguments into tangible success. I really enjoy capturing the essence of what is being learned and structuring essays. I believe that, like math, English can also be formulated and solved through logic means.
I should also mention I have never received a lower grade than A in any English or public speaking class.
