Fun Facts

I love to learn new things. One thing people often notice about me is that I am always carrying a book to read or am reading or listening to a podcast on my phone. The information or skill doesn't even have to be useful. I was bored one day and decided to spend a few hours learning Klingon (from Star Trek). I am also a lover of music. I taught myself how to play the guitar, and before that I was a classically trained violinist for 7 years. I hope to learn how to play the piano at some point.

About Me

I am a math major at Portland State University. I have been on the President's List three times and the Dean's List twice. My GPA has never dropped below a 3.5 which is 0.6 points higher than the average GPA in my major. When I graduate I hope of attend graduate school and obtain my Masters in Mathematics and eventually my PhD. I haven't decided on my permanent career path, yet. The fun thing about having a math degree is you can do just about anything. The possibilities are endless.

Experience

In high school my math teacher handpicked me to be her Algebra I TA. This experience allowed me to see where students make mistakes and how to fix them. When grading I always wrote a paragraph to the student letting them know where and how the could improve. I also volunteered at an elementary school as a math TA. I gave more hands on lessons to a small group of 2ed graders who needed extra help. I was well liked and often sent to help another teacher with their 6th grade class.

Approach

2 million students suffer from math anxiety. I was one of them, but I was lucky enough to have an awesome math teacher who taught me tips and tricks for looking at math that made it easy to understand. That is my goal, to show students that math is something they can be successful at, not something they need to be scared of. Humans are hard wired to do math, so if you are struggling it's not because you can't do it. You just haven't been taught in a way that works for you. That's where I come in.
