Fun Facts
I grew up in Boston, and I've run eight marathons, including my home city's Boston Marathon in 2018 and 2019. Since I was three years old, I've dreamed of being Mayor of Boston
About Me
When I was 9 years old, I was diagnosed with high functioning autism. I was put in a special ed program which I hated. I had a tutor who wasn't very good and support I felt like I didn't need. Finally, wanting to prove I didn't need special ed, I pushed myself to work as hard as I could in every subject. I graduated from high school in 2018 and spent the 18-19 school year working for City Year Boston. Now, I'm a Freshman at UMass Boston.
Experience
With City Year Boston, I worked full time as a "tutor, mentor, and role model" for 6th graders in Boston Public Schools. During the school day, I would be in classrooms helping with classroom management and independent work. After the school day, I would help run an after-school program as part of an 8 person city year team. I got to learn a wide range of approaches and methods of education from the students and educators I worked with.
Approach
As a student in my schools special-ed program, I was always frustrated by the way teachers and tutors who didn't know me seemed to think they knew the best way to help me learn. Because of that, I've always tried to listen to students concerns and include them as much as possible in the education process. My job isn't just to know the subject, it's to help other people learn it, and that can only be done with a full understanding of the individual needs of the student I'm working with.
