About California Institute of Technology
The California Institute of Technology, widely known as Caltech, is a hub for some of the nation's most ambitious and brilliant minds in science and engineering. Founded in 1891 by Amos G. Throop in Pasadena, California, the institution stands out not just for its academic rigor but also for its rich history of research and innovation. Over the years, many related entities have become cornerstones of Caltech's academic and research environment, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which is managed for NASA and specializes in the construction and operation of planetary robotic spacecrafts. The Institute is also affiliated with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and the Palomar and Keck Observatories, which are key facilities for astrophysical research.
The Caltech community is composed of approximately 300 faculty members and a student body of around 2,200, maintaining an unparalleled student-to-faculty ratio of 3:1 that allows for highly personalized education and mentorship. This close-knit academic environment encourages collaboration and innovation, and it is overseen by some of the most distinguished educators and researchers in their respective fields. The focus on undergraduate teaching is emphasized through the house system—a unique residential college system that fosters both social and academic communities. The Beavers, Caltech’s mascot, reflect the school's commitment to industriousness and the pursuit of engineering excellence, just as the industrious beaver does in nature.
Academically, Caltech is renowned for its strengths in STEM fields, particularly physics, chemistry, and biology, and embraces a mission to expand human knowledge through research integrated with education. Notable alumni include Nobel laureates such as Richard Feynman and Linus Pauling, prominent entrepreneurs like Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel and originator of Moore's Law, and Frank Capra, an influential film director. Among its six academic divisions, the Division of Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy, and the Division of Engineering and Applied Science are particularly distinguished. Its picturesque 124-acre campus is adjacent to the San Gabriel Mountains and is a mere drive away from downtown Los Angeles, placing students and faculty members in one of the most dynamic geographical regions of Southern California, rich in cultural, industrial, and scientific opportunities.
