About California Institute of the Arts
California Institute of the Arts, known colloquially as CalArts, is a leading institution dedicated to the advancement of the visual and performing arts. Founded in 1961 through the merger of the Chouinard Art Institute and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, CalArts is known for its innovative approach to arts education and its commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. It is located in Valencia, within the city of Santa Clarita, just north of Los Angeles, a city renowned for its vibrant arts scene and entertainment industry—an essential facet of its geographical significance. The institute houses various on-campus entities, such as the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) located in downtown Los Angeles, which serves as a contemporary arts center featuring diverse performances and exhibitions.
The faculty at CalArts are distinguished artists and scholars in their respective fields, often intertwined with affiliated entities such as the REDCAT, where they may present works, lectures, and engage with the broader arts community in Los Angeles. Tutors and mentors at CalArts are practitioners who provide students with insight into various artistic disciplines, preparing them for careers in the creative industries. CalArts' community is enriched by ongoing guest artist workshops, master classes, and collaborations, which form an integral part of the institution's learning environment. This allows students to gain practical knowledge and experience within their chosen fields.
CalArts embraces a cohort of over 1,500 students and offers degrees across six schools: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, and Theater. It is heralded for contributions in areas such as experimental animation and character animation, with notable alumni including Tim Burton, Brad Bird, and John Lasseter, who have significantly influenced Hollywood and the animation industry. The institute does not have an official mascot, which aligns with its ethos of individuality and artistic freedom. CalArts fosters a community where the creativity of each student is celebrated, a place where future luminaries can thrive, innovate, and impact the world of art and entertainment upon graduation.
