About College of the Atlantic
College of the Atlantic (COA) is a unique liberal arts institution located in Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Founded in 1969 by Father James Gower and Les Brewer, its picturesque location overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, adjacent to Acadia National Park. Known for its innovative approach to higher education, College of the Atlantic is among the few institutions globally that focus on Human Ecology, an interdisciplinary field that analyzes the relationships between humans and their environments. COA has gained acclaim for its sustainability initiatives, including being one of the first colleges to vow carbon neutrality. The college's Beech Hill Farm and the Great Duck Island are among the significant entities associated with COA, serving as vital resources for student research and community involvement.
The educational experience at COA is strongly enriched by its student-to-faculty ratio, allowing for an intimately guided academic exploration. Tutors, often known as faculty members at COA, are integral entities that foster a community of shared learning. They come from a range of academic backgrounds, contributing to the college's interdisciplinary approach. Faculty members often collaborate with local and international organizations, bringing real-world challenges into their curricula. The tutors are not only educators but also mentors guiding students through individualized courses of study that transcend traditional subject boundaries.
An emblematic feature of COA is the lack of a traditional mascot, reflecting its ethos of non-conformity and emphasis on individuality. Instead, the college celebrates its close-knit community of approximately 350 students, championing diversity and creativity among its student body. Prominent alumni include author and environmental advocate Anna Somers Cocks, and conservation biologist Catherine Schmitt. Despite its small size, COA boasts impressive facets such as the Allied Whale, a marine mammal research organization, and the esteemed annual Bar Island Swim event. The Sharpe-McNally Chair of Green and Socially Responsible Business endows one of the prominent colleges at COA, emphasizing a commitment to environmental stewardship and ethical entrepreneurship. With a single major in Human Ecology, students of COA are prepared to address complex global issues with a holistic and innovative mindset.
