Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is a public university founded on May 3, 1991, when then-Governor Lawton Chiles signed a bill creating the university. It opened its doors to students in 1997 and is located in Fort Myers, Florida, near the Southwest Florida International Airport, making it easily accessible for both commuter and international students. Known for its strong focus on environmental sustainability, FGCU's programs in environmental science and engineering reflect the rich ecological context of its surrounding areas, such as the Everglades and coastal ecosystems. The university has grown rapidly since its inception, earning a reputation for its business, engineering, and health programs. With a sprawling campus situated on 800 acres of land, FGCU has become an integral part of the southwest Florida landscape and plays a critical role in the local economy and cultural life.
The university is represented by its mascot, Azul the Eagle, and boasts an enrollment of over 15,000 students. Among those students are individuals benefiting from the efforts of FGCU faculty and tutors, including those affiliated with entities such as the Center for Academic Achievement (CAA), which offers tutoring and learning services. Tutors at FGCU often work closely with academic departments or are part of programs such as the Honors College to provide subject-specific assistance to their peers. This support network is part of FGCU's commitment to student success and academic excellence.
Among FGCU's notable alumni are Kailyn Perez, who was crowned Miss Florida USA in 2014, and Chris Sale, a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. The university is organized into several colleges, including the prominent Lutgert College of Business, U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering, and the Marieb College of Health & Human Services. These institutions within FGCU reinforce the university's standing in the academic community, offering a diverse range of programs and research opportunities that draw both national and international attention.
