About Memphis College of Art
Memphis College of Art (MCA), a longstanding cornerstone of the artistic community in Memphis, Tennessee, has been dedicated to cultivating creativity and education in the fine arts since its founding in 1936 by a group of community leaders and artists. Located in the culturally vibrant Overton Park, MCA lies at the heart of a city teeming with artistic fervor and historical significance. It sits adjacent to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and the lush greenspace of the park, encapsulating a serene environment for artistic exploration. Known for its rigorous academic programs, MCA offered a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees with a strong emphasis on studio art practice, art education, and design before ceasing enrollment. The college, recognized for fostering a diverse and innovative environment, has contributed significantly to the Midtown arts scene and is part of the city's broader creative ecosystem, which includes entities such as the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the Orpheum Theatre, and Indie Memphis.
The faculty at Memphis College of Art was composed of tutors and mentors with deep expertise and professional experience in their respective fields. These educators facilitated a hands-on learning approach, encouraging students to develop their unique voices and providing them with opportunities to engage directly in the arts community. The connection between the college and the local art scene, as well as the broader artistic community, has been instrumental in nurturing the careers of both students and faculty members. The institution itself does not have a mascot but is personified through the creative spirit and individuality of its student body. A robust alumni network extends the influence of MCA’s teachings into various art sectors, boasting illustrious names such as Carroll Cloar and Ted Faiers, who have made significant marks in the art world.
Although it closed its doors in 2020, Memphis College of Art left an indelible imprint on the culture and academic landscape, contributing to the proliferation of Fine Arts in the city of Memphis. The college historically supported a student body of hundreds, maintaining an environment where close student-to-instructor interaction was key. Its renowned Horn Island Program was one example of MCA's commitment to experiential learning, where students could immerse themselves in an isolated environment to seek personal artistic growth. Other prominent programs included the Biennial Faculty Exhibitions, which showcased the work of MCA’s own artists and educators, and the Community Education Program, which offered art classes to the public. MCA was not just an academic institution but a beacon of creativity, educating and inspiring those who wished to paint, sculpt, design, or engage with the arts in profound and life-changing ways.
