About National Hispanic University
The National Hispanic University, based in San Jose, California, was founded in 1981 by Dr. B. Roberto Cruz, whose vision was to create an institution that would address the educational needs of Hispanics and other minorities. Although the university closed its doors in 2015, it was known during its time for providing accessible higher education with a multicultural emphasis. At its height, NHU offered undergraduate degrees in business, education, and liberal arts, as well as certificates and credential programs designed to promote leadership and professional development in the Hispanic community. The university was geographically situated near other major Silicon Valley entities, offering a strategic advantage for partnerships and technology-oriented educational pursuits.
The university's faculty and tutors were known to be deeply involved with its mission, offering services not only to the students of NHU but also to related entities such as the Latino College Preparatory Academy, the NHU Foundation, and the NHU Early University Program. This faculty often played multiple roles—educators, mentors, and cultural advocates—providing their students with guidance and support tailored to their unique cultural and educational needs. The personalized tutorship at NHU aimed to create a nurturing environment that encouraged personal and academic growth.
NHU was home to a small but vibrant community, characterized by its intimate atmosphere and personalized attention. Although the exact number of students varied over the years, the university prided itself on having a tight-knit student body. Instead of emphasizing a sports culture, NHU's mascot and athletic programs were not a core focus, underscoring its emphasis primarily on academic and community outreach endeavors. The influence of NHU can still be felt through the accomplishments of its alumni, who have gone on to become leaders in education, business, and community engagement. Prominent colleges within NHU included the College of Business and the College of Education, reflecting its focus on professional fields where Hispanics have historically been underrepresented. Despite its closure, NHU's legacy continues to inspire efforts in advancing educational opportunities for the Hispanic community.
