About Pacific Northwest College of Art
Founded in 1909, the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) has been nurturing creativity and artistic talent in the heart of Portland, Oregon, for well over a century. The college was established by the Portland Society of Art, which sought to bring vibrant, artistic culture and education to the region. PNCA has since evolved into a dynamic arts institution known for academic excellence in the fields of visual arts and design. Not only does the college offer a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs, but it also integrates interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering a community where students and faculty alike challenge the boundaries of conventional art. Located within Portland's thriving creative hub, PNCA is situated near other cultural landmarks such as the Portland Art Museum and the Oregon Historical Society, enhancing the educational ecosystem for its students.
PNCA's faculty is composed of practicing artists, designers, and scholars who bring a wealth of professional experience and creative expertise to the classroom. These tutors are not simply educators, but are often actively engaged in the local and international art scenes, providing students with insights into the real world of art and design. The institution is known for fostering close mentorship relationships between students and their tutors, which is crucial in guiding students through the intricacies of artistic development. PNCA encourages collaboration among its own various entities, such as the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture, which is an important platform for engagement and discourse within the creative community.
The arts college nurtures around 600 students annually, making for an intimate educational environment with a deeply personal approach to learning. PNCA proudly recognizes its notable alumni, who have gone on to become influential artists, designers, and thinkers, further cementing the college's significance in the global art community. Among its distinguished alumni are the likes of visual artist Wendy Red Star and acclaimed graphic novelist and animator Vera Brosgol. The college celebrates a vibrant student life encompassing a range of extracurricular activities and sports, all of which rally behind their charming mascot — the ‘Untitled’ (the Artwork as Mascot). As a hub of artistic innovation, PNCA houses several prominent colleges, including the Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies and the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design, each dedicated to advancing the boundaries of creativity and artistic excellence.
