About School of Visual Arts
The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City is a dynamic center for the education of artists, designers, and creative professionals. Founded in 1947 by Silas H. Rhodes and Burne Hogarth, SVA has become known for its innovative curriculum and focus on the preparation of students for careers in the arts. Originally established as the Cartoonists and Illustrators School, SVA has expanded its reach to include a diverse range of disciplines such as fine arts, photography, graphic design, film, and more. Nestled in the bustling arts scene of Manhattan, SVA sits amid famous landmarks like the Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park, contributing to the city's vibrant cultural tapestry.
SVA boasts an impressive faculty consisting of distinguished artists, designers, and educators who are active professionals in their respective fields. The tutors often bring their real-world experience into the classroom, providing students with current industry insights and the opportunity to forge connections with renowned creative entities. Additionally, the college hosts regular public events, lectures, and exhibitions that feature work by faculty members, further extending their influence on the art and design community in New York and beyond. The interaction between students and such high-caliber professionals is central to SVA's educational philosophy, fostering a hands-on, mentorship-driven learning environment.
Remarkably, SVA does not have a traditional college mascot, preferring to let the creative spirit and work of its student body symbolize the institution. The college enrolls over 4,000 students, with an alumni network that is rich with notable figures such as graphic designer Milton Glaser, film director Jared Leto, and illustrator Tomer Hanuka, providing mentorship and inspiration to the current student body. Among its many sought-after programs, the College boasts renowned colleges such as the MFA Computer Art Department, BFA Film Department, and BFA Design Department. These colleges ensure a rich tradition of producing alumni who go on to shape the visual and performing arts industries, proving that the School of Visual Arts stands as a pillar of creativity and innovation in the heart of New York City.
