About University of Oregon
Founded in 1876, the University of Oregon (UO) is nestled in the city of Eugene, often dubbed "Track Town, USA," for its rich track and field history. UO is internationally recognized for both academic and athletic prowess and is known for its School of Journalism and Communication and the Lundquist College of Business, among others. The university's lush campus is an integral part of the city's fabric, positioned beautifully along the Willamette River and just a hop away from the city's artistic center and downtown area. As an epicenter of research and innovation, UO is home to numerous institutes, like the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology and the Institute of Ecology and Evolution, further cementing its reputation as a leader in various fields of study.
Walking around the vibrant campus, you're bound to encounter the spirited University of Oregon Duck, affectionately known as the Oregon Duck or by his namesake "Puddles," who is the beloved mascot cheerleading a student body of over 22,000 Ducks. This spirit is echoed through the diverse range of majors and programs offered, enriched by an equally diverse selection of tutors and educators who are part of the vibrant UO tutoring community, found within entities like the Tutoring and Academic Engagement Center. These educators play a pivotal role in nurturing the minds that have gone on to become notable alumni, such as Phil Knight, co-founder of Nike Inc., and award-winning author Cheryl Strayed.
The University of Oregon is also known for its outstanding athletic programs, particularly in track and field, which resonate with the historic Hayward Field. Moreover, it boasts an array of prominent colleges, including the College of Education, known for its groundbreaking research and teaching methods, and the School of Architecture and Environment, where creativity and sustainability merge. The university has cultivated a legacy of comprehensive education, research, and public service. As an institution, UO remains a cornerstone of progress and tradition in Oregon and beyond, continuing to celebrate a long-standing commitment to empowering future generations of thinkers, leaders, and innovators.
