About University of Science and Arts of Oklahom
The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, also known as USAO, is the state's only public liberal arts college, and it holds a unique position within Oklahoma's higher education system. Established in 1908 as the Oklahoma Industrial Institute and College for Girls, and later known as the Oklahoma College for Women, USAO has a long history of fostering a broad-based educational approach. The institution, which is based in Chickasha, Oklahoma, is strategically located south of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, allowing access to a larger urban setting while maintaining its small-town collegiate charm. Notable among the college’s features is its rigorous interdisciplinary core curriculum, known as the Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) program, which exemplifies its commitment to a well-rounded education.
USAO takes pride in offering a personalized learning experience, with a low student-to-faculty ratio ensuring that tutors and professors are closely involved with the students' academic growth. This personalized approach extends through various academic departments and programs, ranging from the arts and sciences to professional studies. Given its emphasis on a liberal arts education, the institution does not have separate 'colleges' within it, but it offers diverse fields of study, including natural sciences, arts, and social sciences, amongst others, with all programs being interlinked through IDS. Additionally, USAO employs dedicated faculty members many of whom hold the highest degree in their field, enhancing the quality of education and research opportunities available to students.
Having a small yet vibrant student population, the university boasts its Drover mascot, symbolizing the pioneering spirit of the students and faculty. An array of facts adds to the allure of USAO; among them is the fact that the institution is known for an alumni network that includes notable figures such as Te Ata Fisher, a celebrated Chickasaw storyteller, and Jeanne Hoffman Smith, a renowned philanthropist and mental health advocate. Although it is one of the smaller public institutions in Oklahoma, with an enrollment usually around 800 students, USAO’s impact on its students and dedication to interdisciplinary studies remains profound, reflecting its status as a hidden gem within Oklahoma's educational landscape.
