Fun Facts

I have been helping people with learning for most of my life in one way or another. One thing that people like about the way I tutor is that I start with the idea that the student is smart enough to understand the subject - it is just a matter of finding a way of explaining it that makes sense to them! This is different for each student and I love the challenge of finding the way that makes it easy for them to learn the material.

About Me

I am a programmer/consultant with a BS in science/texas/fort-worth">Computer Science/Telecommunications. For the 'science' requirement, I took Biology, instead of the standard Chemistry or Physics. Before I was a science/texas/fort-worth">Computer Science major, I had completed all of the requirements for an Elementary Education degree except for the Student Teaching portion. I have been a substitute teacher during periods between Programming Jobs.

Experience

I have been a tutor for most of my life. When I was young, I realized that school came easily to me. I learned early on that other kids wanted me to let them cheat, but I would tell them "I won't help you cheat, but I will help you learn" and that was when I started being a tutor. I have an insatiable curiosity and a love of learning new things. I especially love seeing how others understand things in their own unique way.

Approach

My approach is largely the Socratic Method, because I find that most students are smarter than they feel they are in the moment and I try to draw out their own knowledge. If someone is 'hitting a brick wall' with the standard approach, I will try to find an alternate explanation of the concept - usually building with the blocks of what they do understand, in order to make the tough parts manageable.
