Fun Facts

I absolutely love to write and to read. My husband can often find me sitting with a good book or thinking about how the ending of a book could have been different. My love of literature spilled over into my classroom and my excitement was obvious to my students. One of our favorites activities to do as a class was to write and illustrate a book together.

About Me

I grew up on the coast of Florida where I lived until recently. In high school I volunteered with several local charities and first noticed my love of teaching. I attended The University of South Florida where I earned my degree in Elementary Education. I was hired to teach Kindergarten the August after my graduation. I very quickly began my Master's Degree in Reading K-12 and completed it in 2013. I enjoy communicating with people. The success of the student is my ultimate goal.

Experience

While in high school, I would albuquerque">tutor the neighborhood children and that is when I fell in love with teaching. During my under grad I had many internships ranging in grades from Kindergarten through high school in numerous subjects. I love planning, organizing and igniting a passion for learning. Since I love literature and literacy, my degree in Reading K-12 was an obvious choice for me to make.

Approach

My teaching career has given me the opportunity to try out many different approaches. Children all learning differently and their needs are all valid. I am very structured and organized, but really enjoy having fun with the students and seeing their "light bulbs" turn on when they understand the subject matter.

English Tutoring

I taught Kindergarten for four years. Our mornings were literacy heavy and focused on phonics, letter recognition, letter sound recognition, learning sight words, reading fluency and reading comprehension. I also interned in a middle school reading intervention class and created units revolving around similar reading components, but on a higher level.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

While teaching I used a prescribed reading comprehension plan, but would often integrate my own resources. I tested the students individually and in a group setting to monitor their ongoing progress. I prefer to use Words Their Way and the ARI to assess growth in this area.

Religion Tutoring

I attended Catholic school for nine years and worked at one for four years. I have an understand of the bible and its principles.

Social Studies Tutoring

I taught in an elementary school and really enjoyed teaching social studies. My students would often engage in hands on, critical thinking activities to gain a better understanding of the material. They would create maps with cardinal directions and landforms, learn about varying cultures and interact through plays to understand human rights.

Study Skills Tutoring

Even young students are being tested in the school system and having a foundation of study skills is very important. My students would learn how to take short notes off of the board, how to speak with each other about the given topic and how to pinpoint the crucial information in a piece of text.

Writing Tutoring

Writing is a great passion of mine. My students would spend about 45 minutes daily with writing. They learned the very basics of how to write a sentence and then would progress into writing short paragraphs. We focused on factual writing as well as creative.
